International business inside and outside HCAR’s campus is booming as vivoPharm, our second Australian tenant, celebrated its grand opening this month and we prepare to kick-off an outreach campaign to target future tenants from Australia. Off-campus, a neighboring Central Pennsylvania medical device company, Unilife Corporation, shares its experiences in transitioning from Australia to the U.S., HCAR tenant Better Bowls celebrates a major milestone and Dr. Giovenella returns to HCAR for the Lunch and Learn series to present an overview of ecological trends in the biopharmaceutical industry.

vivoPharm Opens its Doors for U.S. Operations

Grand Opening Event Hosted at HCAR

On September 13, HCAR welcomed its newest global connection, vivoPharm, to its campus with a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception celebrating the opening of its new facility.

For nearly a decade, vivoPharm, a contract research organization, has served the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries with clinically predictive, integrated preclinical services in different disease areas (with a focus on cancer) from its facilities in Adelaide, Australia and Munich, Germany. Today, they are recognized as the fastest growing CRO in Australia with ambitious plans to triple in size over the next three years and to hire 13 people within its first year of operation in the U.S.

Australian Outreach Campaign Encourages Companies to Make the Move

HCAR Looks to Attract More Australian-Based Organizations

After sharing in the experiences of opening U.S. facilities for two Australian-based organizations, HCAR is launching the Australian Outreach Campaign to encourage more transitioning Australian companies to choose HCAR as their sounding board for business in the U.S.

Experience from last year’s tenant ventures has given HCAR a better understanding of the dynamics of relocating from halfway across the globe. Having become very familiar with Australian business culture, the HCAR team understands the nuances of relocating and has made even the little tasks, such as setting up a bank account, that much simpler.

Central Pennsylvania Technology Spotlight: Medical Device Manufacturer Unilife Corporation

In the five years since HCAR officially opened for business, Central Pennsylvania has become a premier location for international organizations looking to grow their business within the U.S. Among the international organizations within this network is medical device manufacturer Unilife Corporation, an organization that moved its headquarters from Australia to Central Pennsylvania. in 2008.

Recognized as the world’s largest market for medical device manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, the decision to move to the U.S. was a simple one. The organization’s business objectives were transitioning from technology to manufacturing, and Unilife needed to build a physical presence within a well-developed device market. After an extensive search for the right location, the organization chose Central Pennsylvania for its labor resources, government conditions, low taxes and access to the major U.S. capital markets.

Lunch and Learn Series Presents “An Ecological Look at Trends in Drug Development”

Dr. Giovenella, Ph.D. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine and Drug Discovery Analyst, University of Pennsylvania Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine, returns to HCAR on Thursday, October 6 to present an overview of ecological trends in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Given the success of last year’s presentation, HCAR asked Dr. Giovenella to present again this October on compound traffic and environmental relationships in drug development. The presentation will include highlights from his database of more than 3,000 compounds from the pipelines of more than 1,400 companies, more than 1,000 approvals, an outlook on career trends through 2020, a look at environmental effects from an aging population, emerging markets and a question and answer session.

A Growing Company in Hershey, Pa. is Improving the Health of an Increasing Number of Americans

From their home in HCAR, Better Bowls has been leveraging their patent pending technology to improve the health of consumers throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic for the past year.

Already available in nearly 1,000 stores throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including Stop & Shop, GIANT and Weis locally, Better Bowls launched snack sized versions of their products last week in over 120 Wal-Mart stores throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut and New Jersey.
